The “Greek Silk Road” initiative was born from a small but determined group of people sharing a common vision: to document, highlight, and connect the legacy of silk in Greece through a unified cultural route.
Through research, collaborations with local and institutional stakeholders, and with deep respect for our cultural heritage, we laid the foundations for a network that links places, people, and memories.
Our goal is not only to record and showcase the Greek dimension of the silk story, but also to become part of a wider European effort by actively contributing to the formation of the European Cultural Route of Silk.
With consistency and commitment, we continue our journey alongside partners who share the same passion: to give silk its rightful place in Europe’s contemporary cultural landscape.

Photographer – Creator of Digital Cultural Routes
Giannis Zarzonis was born in 1972 and has been professionally active in photography since 1992. After his first collaborations with local magazines in Thessaloniki, he went on to work with almost all major Greek publications, National Geographic Traveler, as well as numerous public and private institutions, focusing on travel and cultural photography.
Since 1995, he has developed a wide range of publications — postcards, posters, photographic albums, and travel guides — building an extensive visual archive that documents the landscapes and culture of Greece.
In 2011, he founded the project Escape Greece, aiming to systematically photograph the entire country and create the Greek Images image bank.
In 2022, he completed the digital travel portal www.themountolympus.com, dedicated to Mount Olympus, the mythical mountain of Greece, while also documenting the historic Via Egnatia route from Constantinople to Durrës (project Via Egnatia Route).
At the same time, he is developing the international project “The Greek Heritage”, a long-term initiative for the documentation and mapping of Greek monuments, archaeological sites, museums, and locations of Hellenic cultural influence around the world. The project aims to create a global digital archive and cultural route, highlighting the enduring presence and impact of Greek civilization across countries and centuries.
Since 2015, his work has expanded into new imaging and storytelling technologies, including aerial video, time lapse, hyper lapse, star trail, 360° photography and video, VR tours, and underwater filming — merging photography, documentation, and digital narration into a unified cultural experience.
